Samkhya Karika 3

Meaning · English

Root nature is no product. The seven, beginning with the great one, are both source and product. The sixteen are products only. Purusha is neither source nor product.

What exactly is there to know? Samkhya answers by sorting all of reality with one test: does a thing come from something, and does something come from it? Prakriti, nature, is the source of all that changes; in this verse prakriti also means 'source' and vikriti 'product'. At its root, mula-prakriti, it comes from nothing else. Classical Samkhya does not make it the work of a god, and nothing is prior to it. Seven principles are both product and source. Gaudapada lists them. Buddhi, also called mahat or the great one, is the intellect and is born from root nature. Ahamkara, the sense of 'I', is born from buddhi. Five tanmatras, subtle elements of sound, touch, form, taste and smell, are born from ahamkara. Each of these yields a gross element: space, air, fire, water and earth. Sixteen are products only and produce no new principle: five senses, five organs of action, mind, and the five gross elements. Purusha, pure consciousness, is neither made nor making. That gives twenty-five. So mind and intellect fall on nature's side, and Samkhya holds that consciousness alone stands apart.

Picture a family reunion photograph. The great-grandmother in the centre has no parent in the frame. Her children and grandchildren are each someone's child and someone's parent. The youngest have no children yet. The photographer appears nowhere in the picture and is related to nobody in it, yet without the photographer nothing is seen. In that order they map to root nature, the seven, the sixteen and purusha.

The most striking move is where the line falls. Descartes set mind and thought against matter. Samkhya puts intellect, ego and mind on the side of matter, and sets only bare awareness apart. Cognitive science broadly agrees with the first half: reasoning, the self-model and perception are studied as brain processes. The second half lines up with the hard problem of consciousness. Even a full account of brain function may not explain why there is something it is like to experience anything. Physicalists expect that gap to close, and the question is still open. Other parts have no modern match. The five gross elements are not chemistry. The order of derivation, with intellect arising before earth, runs opposite to the cosmic story told today, in which matter long precedes minds.
