Three Ways of Knowing

Perception, inference and the word of a reliable person: since every means of knowing is contained in these, the means of valid knowledge is held to be threefold. For what is to be known is established through a means of knowing.
Before arguing about what exists, Samkhya asks how anything can be known at all. A pramana is a means of valid knowledge, a dependable route from a mind to a fact. Samkhya holds there are exactly three. Perception is the definite grasp of an object through the sense that reaches it. Gaudapada lists the five pairings: ear and sound, skin and touch, eye and form, tongue and taste, nose and smell. Inference (anumana) reasons from what is seen to what is not. Reliable testimony is the word of a trustworthy source. Gaudapada describes that source as someone devoted to their own work, free of attachment and aversion, honoured by others like them, with no reason to lie, and he uses testimony for what the other two cannot reach. Why stop at three? The verse's own reason is that every other proposed means is already contained in them. Gaudapada takes six that others count, such as presumption (a man who never eats by day yet stays plump must eat at night), and folds them in. The last line gives the stakes: anything to be known is settled only through some means of knowing.
Picture deciding whether to take an umbrella. You look out of the window and see clouds. You notice the pavement is dark and wet, so it must have rained a while ago. You check a forecast from a service that has been right before. Those three checks are seeing for yourself, reasoning from a sign, and trusting a reliable report. Samkhya holds that every way of knowing comes down to one of them.
Modern epistemology names much the same core sources of knowledge: perception, inference and testimony. Many lists also add memory and introspection, which Samkhya does not count separately. Cognitive science complicates simple perception. Seeing is constructed by the brain from expectation as well as input, so it can mislead in systematic ways. Testimony is a live debate. Hume treated trust in what others say as justified only by our past experience of reports proving true. Reid held that testimony is a basic source in its own right. Gaudapada's test of a reliable speaker, one free of bias with no motive to deceive, fits today's ordinary standards. His examples, such as the king of the gods and the nymphs of heaven, are where modern readers part ways, because nothing outside the report can check them.
