Perception is the settled grasp of each object by its sense. Inference is said to be of three kinds, and rests on a sign and what bears the sign. Testimony is the word of the reliable.
Three pramanas, or means of valid knowing, have been named. The question now is what exactly each one is. Perception is the settled grasp of an object by the sense suited to it: the ear takes in sound, the eye takes in colour. Inference rests on a sign (linga) and the thing the sign points to (lingi). Gaudapada reads this in both directions. From a staff you infer an ascetic, and from seeing the ascetic you infer that the triple staff is his. He gives three kinds of inference. 'From the prior' works as rising clouds lead you to expect rain, because they did before. 'From the remainder' works as one salty palmful of sea tells you the rest is salty. 'From general observation' works as follows: a man reaches a new place only by moving, so the moon and stars, seen in new places, must move too. Testimony is the word of the reliable. For Gaudapada, that means authoritative teachers such as Brahma, and the Veda.
You are across the room from a kettle. You can watch it boil yourself. You can see steam curling from the spout and conclude that it has boiled. Or someone standing beside it can tell you it has. Direct contact maps to perception. The steam maps to the sign of inference. The person's word maps to testimony, and it is only as good as they are.
Modern epistemology still treats perception, inference and testimony as central sources of knowledge, so the list holds up well. Cognitive science adds that perception is not passive. The brain interprets and settles what it senses, which fits the word 'settled grasp'. The 'from the remainder' kind of inference is generalising from a sample, and Hume's problem of induction asks what justifies that step at all. That question is still open. Testimony has become a lively topic again. Philosophers debate whether trusting a speaker needs separate evidence of their reliability or is a basic source in its own right. Where the views part is the choice of authority. Treating a scripture as reliable testimony about things beyond the senses is a commitment of the school. Mainstream modern thought does not share it.
