Praising the Fire

Rig Veda 1.1.1

Meaning · English

I praise Agni, set in front of the offering, the god who serves as its priest, the one who calls the gods, richest giver of treasure.

Agni is the fire, honoured as a god, and the singer praises him. He is the one placed in front. Sāyaṇa reads this as a royal chaplain who gets the king's wish done, or as the fire set at the front of the ritual ground. He is a god in the sense of a giver. He is the priest who calls the gods to the offering, and he holds and keeps the treasures the offering yields. Because the whole collection begins here, these are the first words spoken in reciting the Rig Veda.

Picture the person who stands at the door of a gathering. He is the first one seen, he calls each guest in by name, and when it ends the gifts are handed out through him. The fire at the front of the rite plays that part: first in place, the one who summons, the one through whom good things come.
