Good Things From Every Side

Rig Veda 1.89.1

Meaning · English

May good resolves come to us from every side, unharmed, unblocked, breaking through. So may the gods be with us always for our growth, unfailing, guarding us day after day.

Gotama asks for two things. First, that good resolves reach us from every direction, and that nothing can damage them, hem them in, or stop them breaking through. Sāyaṇa takes these as the great rites of sacrifice, safe from hostile powers; most later readers hear good intentions. Second, he asks that the gods stay close for our growth, never drifting away, watching over us each day. Because it opens with a wish for good things from all sides, it is often recited before study or new work.

Think of a house in the morning with every window thrown open. Light and air come in from all four walls at once, and nothing in the frame stops them. The prayer asks for good things the same way: from every side, unobstructed, and not a single visit but a daily one, like the sun returning to those windows.
