Honey in Wind and Water

Rig Veda 1.90.6

Meaning · English

For the one who holds to the true order, the winds bring honey and the rivers run with honey. May the plants be full of sweetness for us.

Honey stands for sweetness of every kind: what nourishes, what is pleasant, what does good. The winds and rivers give it to the person who keeps rta, the right order that holds the world and the rite together. Sāyaṇa reads rta narrowly as the sacrifice, so the gift goes to the one performing it; later readers often take it as living rightly. The last line turns from statement to wish: may the plants, which feed and heal, be sweet for us too.

Picture a guitar whose strings are tuned to one another. Pluck any string and the note is sweet; let one slip and every chord turns sour. The verse sees the world the same way: wind, water and growing things give sweetness when the one who receives them keeps in tune with the order that holds everything together.
