Tree, Sun and Cows

Rig Veda 1.90.8

Meaning · English

May the lord of the forest be rich in honey for us, may the sun be rich in honey, may our cows be honey-sweet for us.

The word for honey also carries every kind of sweetness that nourishes. Three things are asked to hold it. The lord of the forest is a great tree. Sāyaṇa takes it as the god of the sacrificial post cut from such trees, and reads the wish as sweet fruit given to us. He links the sun with Savitr, the one who stirs all things into motion. The cows are those whose milk serves the household and its fire offering, and they are asked to give milk that is rich and sweet.

A spoonful of honey stirred into a glass of warm milk does not stay where it fell. In a moment every sip tastes of it, top to bottom. The prayer asks for sweetness in that same way: not a single sweet thing set apart, but sweetness running all through the tree, the sunlight and the herd that keep a family alive.
