Meaning · English

They call it Indra, Mitra, Varuna, Agni; it is the heavenly bird Garutman with lovely wings. What is One, the wise name in many ways: Agni, Yama, Matarishvan.

Indra is the god of storm and strength. Mitra guards the bond between people. Varuna watches over right and wrong. Agni is fire, the flame on the altar. Garutman is a great winged bird of the sky, Yama is lord of the dead, and Matarishvan is the wind. They are not separate rivals. They are one reality, and those who see clearly speak of it in many ways. Sāyaṇa takes that One to be the sun. The older Nirukta takes it to be Agni as the great self.

A woman is 'Mother' to her son, 'Doctor' to her patients, 'Asha' to her friends and 'Mrs. Rao' at the bank. Each name is true, and each comes from a different meeting with her. One person still walks home at night. The names of the gods work the same way: many ways of meeting, one reality met.
