Savitr's Light, Our Thoughts
Rig Veda 3.62.10
Meaning · English
We hold in mind the radiance of the god Savitr, the radiance worth choosing. May he set our thoughts in motion.
Savitr is the sun seen as the one who sets everything moving: waking, work, growth. The prayer has two halves. First, we hold his radiance in mind, the light worth choosing. Sāyaṇa hears in the word for radiance a light that scorches away darkness, and in one reading takes it as food. Second, we ask that this same god stir our thoughts. Sāyaṇa allows those thoughts to be our acts as well. The request is plural: not my mind, but ours.
1. Sit facing east, at first light if you can, with your eyes open or closed. 2. Say the mantra once, slowly, aloud or under your breath. 3. Hold the sun's radiance in mind: the light itself, clear and warm, as the one thing you attend to. 4. When the mind wanders, notice where it went. Say the second half again, asking that your thoughts be set in motion, then return to the light. 5. After ten minutes, stop. Close with the word "our" in view, holding the people who share this morning with you.
