Rig Veda 7.59.12
Meaning · English
We worship the three-eyed one, fragrant, who makes life grow strong. As a cucumber comes loose from its stalk, may I be freed from death, not from the deathless.
Rudra is called the three-eyed. Sāyaṇa also reads the name as father of the three gods. He is fragrant, and Sāyaṇa takes that as a good name that spreads the way scent carries from a tree in flower. He makes things grow: body, wealth and strength. Then comes the picture. A ripe cucumber lets go of its stalk by itself, without being torn. In the same way the speaker asks to let go of death by Rudra's favour, and to stay joined to what does not die.
1. Sit somewhere you can be still and undisturbed. 2. Say the mantra slowly, aloud or under your breath, one half at a time. 3. With the first half, hold Rudra as the verse names him: three-eyed, fragrant, making things grow. 4. With the second half, picture the ripe cucumber on its vine coming away from its stalk on its own. Let your asking be as unforced as that. 5. When the mind wanders, return to the fruit and the stalk, and begin the mantra again. 6. Stop after ten minutes. Sit in silence for a moment before you rise.
