Walk and Speak Together
Rig Veda 10.191.2
Meaning · English
Come together, speak together, let your minds know as one, just as the gods of old, knowing together, came to take their share.
The mantra asks for three things, each built on the word for 'together'. Go together: gather, move as one body. Speak together: the old commentator Sāyaṇa takes this as dropping quarrels and saying the same thing. Let your minds know together: understand the same meaning. Then comes the reason. The gods of earlier times, agreeing among themselves, each received their portion of the offering. Agreement came first; the share followed. Sāyaṇa adds that the people, setting discord aside, will receive their wealth the same way.
Four people carry a heavy table through a narrow door. They step together, one calls the turn and the others answer, and all hold the same picture of the angle. Only once it is through and set down do they sit at it and eat. Moving, speaking and knowing as one come before the share.
