Common Counsel, Common Offering

Rig Veda 10.191.3

समानो मन्त्रः समितिः समानी समानं मनः सह चित्तमेषाम्। समानं मन्त्रमभि मन्त्रये वः समानेन वो हविषा जुहोमि

Meaning · English

Shared be their counsel, shared their gathering, shared their mind, and joined their thinking. I speak over you a shared counsel; with your shared offering I make the offering.

The first half speaks about the people; the second turns and speaks to them. Counsel is the words they plan with; Sāyaṇa takes it as the hymn the priests recite together, or as their private talk. Gathering is the assembly where they meet. Mind is the faculty that weighs things; thinking is what comes of that weighing. He asks that each be shared. Then he sets one word over them all and makes one offering for everyone. Today it closes meetings and classes as a wish for agreement.

Four people lift a heavy dining table. Before they move, one of them counts aloud, and all lift on the same word. If one lifts early, the table tips. The seer's single counsel works like that count: one word spoken over everyone, so that many hands, and many minds, move at the same moment.

साझी हो इनकी मंत्रणा, साझी इनकी सभा, साझा इनका मन, और जुड़ा हुआ इनका चिंतन। मैं तुम सब पर एक ही मंत्रणा कहता हूँ; तुम्हारी साझी आहुति से मैं आहुति देता हूँ।

पहला आधा भाग लोगों के बारे में बोलता है; दूसरा मुड़कर उन्हीं से बात करता है। मंत्रणा वे शब्द हैं जिनसे वे मिलकर योजना बनाते हैं; सायण इसे वह सूक्त मानते हैं जिसे पुरोहित एक साथ पढ़ते हैं, या फिर उनकी निजी बातचीत। सभा वह जमावड़ा है जहाँ वे मिलते हैं। मन वह शक्ति है जो बातों को तौलती है; चिंतन वह है जो उस तौल से निकलता है। वे माँगते हैं कि इनमें से हर एक साझा हो। फिर वे सब पर एक ही वचन रखते हैं और सबके लिए एक ही आहुति देते हैं। आज यह सहमति की कामना के रूप में सभाओं और कक्षाओं का समापन करता है।

चार लोग खाने की एक भारी मेज़ उठाते हैं। हिलाने से पहले उनमें से एक ज़ोर से गिनती बोलता है, और सब एक ही शब्द पर उठाते हैं। अगर कोई पहले उठा ले, तो मेज़ झुक जाती है। ऋषि की एक मंत्रणा उसी गिनती की तरह काम करती है: सब पर बोला गया एक ही शब्द, ताकि बहुत से हाथ, और बहुत से मन, एक ही पल में चल पड़ें।
