Shared Intent, Shared Heart
Rig Veda 10.191.4
Meaning · English
Let your intention be the same, and your hearts alike. Let your mind be the same, so that you may live well in each other's company.
It asks for agreement at three depths. First the intention: what each person sets out to do. Then the heart, where feeling sits. Then the mind, which weighs and decides. The word for mind stays singular, as if many people shared a single mind, though Sāyaṇa takes it as each person's mind made alike. The purpose is stated plainly: so that you may live well in each other's company. Sāyaṇa hears it addressed to the priests and the patron of a rite.
Several people carry a long sofa down a staircase. If one lifts while another lowers, it jams against the wall. When they agree on the turn, take the same care with it, and watch the same step, it moves easily. The mantra asks for that agreement in purpose, feeling and thought, so that a shared life moves just as easily.
