The Doshas of Body and Mind

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 1.57

Meaning · English

Vata, pitta and kapha are named as the doshas of the body. For the mind, in turn, rajas and tamas are named.

Charaka names five forces that can go wrong. Three belong to the body and two belong to the mind. The word dosha means "that which spoils." Each one is a part of ordinary life. It becomes a problem only when it grows out of measure. Elsewhere the classics describe vata as movement: breath, pulse, the passage of food, the firing of thought. They describe pitta as transformation: heat, digestion, turning one thing into another. They describe kapha as structure: what holds the body together, keeps it moist and makes it steady. In the mind, rajas is restless drive, wanting and agitation. Tamas is heaviness, dullness and inertia. Notice what the verse leaves out. Sattva, the clear and steady quality of mind, is not on the list. The tradition explains that this is because clarity does not spoil anything. The teaching gives a person two separate vocabularies. Body and mind can each lose their measure, and each has its own way of doing so. The verse names the faults of body and mind separately. One way to take this is that both deserve attention.

Picture a pot of rice on a stove. The pot has to hold its shape. The flame has to be steady. The water has to bubble and move. If the bubbling is too wild, it boils over. If the flame is too high, the rice scorches. If the water is too thick, it turns to glue. The cook's attention matters too. A frantic cook ruins it, and so does a drowsy one. The pot is kapha, the flame is pitta, and the moving water is vata. The frantic cook is rajas, and the drowsy one is tamas.

Modern medicine has no doshas. No blood test finds vata, and no scan shows kapha. As substances, they have no modern match. As categories of function, though, they line up loosely with things physiology does describe. Vata resembles movement: nerve signals, breathing, muscle action and the gut's steady push. Pitta resembles transformation: digestion, metabolism and body heat. Kapha resembles structure: tissue, fluid, lubrication and stored reserves. On the mind's side, a good doctor would recognise both states. Agitation and restless worry on one hand, sluggishness and low drive on the other, are things clinicians ask about. Today's medicine also agrees that mental strain and bodily illness are distinct but linked. Each deserves its own attention, and persistent trouble in either is a reason to see a doctor.
