The Qualities of Vata

Meaning · English
Vata, the wind, is dry, cold, light, subtle, moving, clear and rough. Substances with the opposite qualities bring it to rest.
Vata is the classics' name for movement in the body: breath, the pulse, the passage of food, the stir of thought. Charaka describes it by seven qualities. It is dry, with no oiliness. It is cold. It is light, not heavy. It is subtle, able to reach into the finest channels. It is moving, never settled. It is clear, the opposite of sticky or slimy. It is rough, like a surface that catches the hand. The second line gives the remedy in one stroke. Whatever carries the opposite qualities quiets it: what is oily, warm, heavy, dense, steady, slick and smooth. The verse gives no reason. In this system's terms, like increases like and opposites settle each other, so a quality is met by its counterweight rather than fought head on. What it asks of a person is attention to qualities rather than labels. A meal, a season or a habit can each be dry or oily, cold or warm, restless or steady, and that is what the text reads.
In winter a dry wind leaves the backs of the hands rough, cold and cracked. More wind or a cold rinse only makes it worse. A little warm oil worked into the skin, and they soften and stop smarting. That is the method in miniature: the wind's dryness, chill and roughness are met by something oily, warm and smooth, each quality turned the other way.
Today's medicine has no organ, fluid or measurable thing that matches vata, and no evidence that the body runs on seven such qualities. What survives translation is the habit of matching a condition with its opposite. A family doctor would agree that dry, cold weather roughens skin and that oils and warmth help it. Warm, regular meals tend to sit easier with a sensitive gut than cold, irregular ones. Restlessness and poor sleep often settle with steady routines, rest and warmth. These are general patterns, not proof of the old scheme. Heavy, oily food is also not right for everyone; for someone with heart disease, diabetes or weight concerns it can do harm, and a doctor's advice comes first.
