Satyakama, Son of Jabala
Chandogya Upanishad 4.4
The story · English
Satyakama went to his mother, Jabala, and said, "Mother, I want to live as a student of sacred knowledge. What family do I come from?" Jabala gave him no story. "I don't know, my son, what family you come from. When I was young I went about a great deal, working as a maid, and that is when I had you. So I don't know. But my name is Jabala, and your name is Satyakama. Call yourself Satyakama Jabala." So he went to the teacher Haridrumata Gautama and said, "I want to live as a student of sacred knowledge. Let me be your pupil, sir." Gautama asked him what any teacher would ask. "What family are you from, my dear?"
Satyakama answered him exactly as he had been answered. "I don't know, sir. I asked my mother. She said that when she was young she went about a great deal working as a maid, and had me then, so she doesn't know. She said, 'My name is Jabala, your name is Satyakama.' So I am Satyakama Jabala, sir." Gautama said, "No one but a Brahmin could speak as plainly as that. Go and bring the firewood, my dear. I will take you as my pupil. You have not strayed from the truth." Then he set apart four hundred cows, thin and weak, and said, "Look after these." As Satyakama drove them off, he said, "I won't come back until there are a thousand." And he stayed away for years.
When the herd at last reached a thousand, the bull spoke to him. "Satyakama." "Sir," he answered. "We are a thousand now, my dear. Take us to the teacher's house. And let me tell you a quarter of Brahman." "Tell me, sir." "The east is one sixteenth. The west is one sixteenth. The south is one sixteenth. The north is one sixteenth. That is a quarter of Brahman, four sixteenths, and its name is the Shining. Whoever knows it this way and honours it as the Shining becomes shining in this world, and wins shining worlds. Fire will tell you another quarter." The next morning he drove the cows on. Where they stopped at evening, he built a fire, penned the cows, laid on fuel, and sat west of the fire, facing east.
The fire spoke. "Satyakama." "Sir." "Let me tell you, my dear, a quarter of Brahman." "Tell me, sir." "The earth is one sixteenth, the atmosphere one, the sky one, the ocean one. That quarter is called the Endless. Whoever honours it so becomes endless here, and wins endless worlds. A swan will tell you a quarter." The next evening he did it all again: the fire, the cows penned in, the fuel, his seat facing east. A swan flew down. "Satyakama." "Sir." "Fire is one sixteenth, the sun one, the moon one, lightning one. That quarter is the Luminous. Whoever honours it so becomes luminous, and wins luminous worlds. A diver-bird will tell you a quarter." On the third evening, by the same fire, a diver-bird flew down and called his name, and again he said, "Sir."
"Breath is one sixteenth," the diver-bird said, "the eye one, the ear one, the mind one. That quarter is called Possessing-a-support. Whoever honours it so comes to have a support in this world, and wins worlds that have one." Then Satyakama reached the teacher's house. The teacher called to him. "Satyakama." "Sir." "My dear, you shine like someone who knows Brahman. Who has been teaching you?" "Others than men," Satyakama said. "But I'd like you to tell it to me yourself. I've heard from people like you, sir, that what is learned from a teacher is what best brings a person to the goal." So the teacher taught it to him. And in that teaching nothing at all was left out. Nothing was left out.
