Keeper of Rama's Door
Hanuman Chalisa 23
Meaning · English
You are the guard who keeps Rama's door. No one goes in there unless you give the word.
Tulsidas pictures Hanuman standing watch at Rama's door. The word for him, rakhvare, means a keeper or watchman. Agya is the leave he gives. The way to Rama passes Hanuman first, and nobody slips in by the side. The Ramcharitmanas leaves Hanuman in this place of service. After Rama is crowned in Ayodhya, the other monkey chiefs go home, and Hanuman stays on with him. The guard at the door is the servant who never left.
Think of the watchman at the gate of a large family house in an Indian town. The family trusts him, and he knows everyone who comes. Visitors stop and speak to him first, and he walks them in. Hanuman is that watchman at Rama's door: the one a devotee comes to first, because he is the one who takes people inside.
