Shelter That Ends Fear

Hanuman Chalisa 24

Meaning · English

Whoever comes to your shelter finds every comfort. With you as protector, why should anyone be afraid?

The line has two halves. First, whoever comes into your sarna, your shelter, gains every comfort. Lahai simply means 'gets' or 'finds'. Second, you are the rachchhak, the protector, so who needs to fear anything? Dar is plain fear, and the line ends by setting it aside. Sugriva lived this. He was hiding on Rishyamuka from his brother Vali with Hanuman beside him, and Hanuman went down to meet Rama on his behalf. Both Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas tell this story.

A small child on a narrow lane meets a barking dog, slips behind a parent's legs, and peeks out, no longer crying. The dog has not gone anywhere. What changed is where the child stands. Shelter works like that. The danger stays, but the one sheltered now stands behind someone the danger cannot get past.
