Might Held in Check
Hanuman Chalisa 25
Meaning · English
Your own blazing might, only you can hold it back. At your roar, all three worlds tremble.
Tej is Hanuman's blazing power, the heat and light of his strength. Samharo apai says he alone can rein it in. No one else is strong enough to contain it, so when it stays held, that is his own choice. Hank is his roar, a war-cry, and at it the three worlds, heaven, earth and the world below, shake. The Ramcharitmanas pictures it on the shore before the leap to Lanka: Hanuman, golden and huge, roaring again and again like a lion.
Picture a big guard dog at a farm gate. When a stranger comes near, its bark rattles windows down the whole lane. Yet the household's small child leans against its side and naps there. The same animal holds both. Hanuman's roar is the bark, and his held-back strength is the child's safe nap.
