Spirits and the Spoken Name

Hanuman Chalisa 26

Meaning · English

Ghosts and flesh-eating spirits do not come near when the name of the Great Hero is spoken aloud.

Bhut are the restless spirits of the dead. Pisach are fiercer beings, the kind old stories place around cremation grounds. Nikat nahin avai means they do not come near. Only one condition is given: someone speaks the name of Mahabir, the Great Hero, a title for Hanuman. There is no weapon in the line and no rite, only the name said aloud. Devotees carry this line into dark roads and lonely nights, holding that the name keeps such things at a distance.

A watchman's whistle in a dark lane at night: one blast and those loitering at the corner slip away, though the watchman is still around the bend. They know whose whistle it is. In the line, the name does that work. Hanuman does not arrive. The sound says this ground is his to guard.
