Steady Remembrance, Pain Lifted
Hanuman Chalisa 27
Meaning · English
Disease is destroyed and all pain is taken away for the one who keeps repeating, without ceasing, brave Hanuman.
Two kinds of trouble are named. Rog is illness of the body. Sab pira is all pain, every lingering ache. Nasai says the illness is destroyed, and harai says the pain is carried off. The condition is japat nirantar: repeating, with no gap. Hanumat bira is Hanuman the hero. Tulsidas states it plainly, and devotees hold the line as a promise of comfort in sickness. Behind it stands the Hanuman who carried the healing mountain to save Lakshmana, told in both Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas.
A cool cloth on a feverish child's forehead helps only while someone keeps changing it. Once it warms and is left there, the heat comes back. So someone sits up all night, dipping, wringing, laying it back. Nirantar asks for that kind of keeping: remembrance renewed before it goes warm, not taken up once and set down.
