Hanuman Chalisa 28
Meaning · English
Hanuman sets free from trouble whoever keeps him in thought, in action and in speech.
Sankat is a tight place, a narrow pass with no way out. Chhudavai is to set loose, to free. Hanuman draws the person out of the tight place. Who is meant? The one who brings him into dhyan, steady attention, through man, kram and bachan: mind, deed and word together. The line asks for all three, not the lips alone. In Valmiki, Hanuman did this for Sugriva, hiding from Vali, by going to meet Rama on his behalf.
A rope let down into a well. The person below comes up only if the rope holds, and a rope twisted from three strands holds where a single strand frays and snaps. The three strands are mind, deed and word. When all three are twisted toward Hanuman, there is something firm for him to pull on.
