Servant of the Ascetic King
Hanuman Chalisa 29
Meaning · English
Over all stands Rama, the king who lived as an ascetic. Every one of his tasks, you carried through to the end.
Sab par means over all, and Rama stands there. Tulsidas calls him a tapasvi raja, a king who lived as an ascetic. In both Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas, Rama leaves his throne for fourteen years in the forest, dressed in bark and keeping hard vows, and remains a king all the same. Kaj is work or a task. Saja means set in order, brought to completion. Searching for Sita, crossing to Lanka, carrying the mountain of herbs for Lakshmana: Hanuman finished each one.
A family goes away and leaves its house with a neighbour who has never let a single job slip. The plants get watered, the post comes in, the lock gets checked every night. When trouble comes on that street, people knock there first. Hanuman finished every task of the king above all, and that record is why devotees bring their own needs to him.
