Boundless Fruit of Living

Hanuman Chalisa 30

Meaning · English

And whoever brings any other wish of the heart, that very one receives the fruit of life, without measure.

Aur means 'and other': anything beyond what came before. Manorath is a wish the mind forms, a longing a person carries. Lavai is 'brings': the person carries that wish to Hanuman and sets it before him. Soi is 'that very one.' Amit means without measure. Jivan phal is the fruit of a life, what living yields. In the line's own telling, whoever comes with any wish at all receives that fruit, with no ceiling placed on it. Devotees hold that no wish is turned away for being too small.

A big mango tree stands at the edge of a village path. Children, travellers, an old man with a stick: whoever walks under it gets shade, and in season, fruit. The tree does not ask why they came. Hanuman stands like that tree. Whatever wish someone carries to him, they do not leave empty-handed.
