Glory Across Four Ages

Hanuman Chalisa 31

Meaning · English

Your splendour stands through all four ages; it is famous everywhere, a light shining across the whole world.

Charom jug are the four ages by which Indian tradition measures the life of the world, from the first age of truth down to the present one. Partap is Hanuman's glory, the force his presence carries. Tulsidas says it was never bound to one era. It shone in Rama's age, the time of the Ramayana told by Valmiki and in the Ramcharitmanas, and it still shines in the age Tulsidas lived in. Parsiddh means known by everyone. Jagat ujiyara means the whole world is lit by it.

Picture a streetlamp at the corner of an old lane. Grandparents walked home under it, then their children, now their grandchildren, and every night it comes on and the corner is safe to cross. Hanuman's glory works like that lamp: not a light from one evening long ago, but one that has stood over the road through every age.
