Saints Guarded, Demons Undone
Hanuman Chalisa 32
Meaning · English
You are the guardian of holy men and saints, the destroyer of demons, the darling of Rama.
Rakhvare is a guard, someone who keeps watch. Hanuman keeps watch over the sadhu and the sant, people who live simply and carry no weapons. Nikandan means rooting out: he pulls up the asuras, the demons, at the root. Dulare is the tender word for a cherished child, so he is Rama's darling. The Ramcharitmanas shows both halves at once. On his way to fetch the healing herb for Lakshmana, Hanuman kills Kalanemi, a demon disguised as a holy man.
A sheepdog lies among the flock all afternoon, so calm that the lambs step over it. When a wolf shows at the tree line, the same dog is up and standing between the flock and the wolf. The saints are the flock, with nothing to fight with. The demons are the wolf. Hanuman is that one dog, gentle and fierce by turns.
