Born Again Through Practice

Mahabharata, Santi Parva 236.15

Meaning · English

A person who keeps the duties laid down for him, and who studies the Vedas and the other scriptures, becomes a dwija, one born a second time.

Two words carry this. Dwija comes from dvi, two, and ja, born. It means twice-born: first from the mother, then into a way of living. Dharma, from the root dhri, to hold up, means the duty that holds a life steady. Here it is the duties laid down for a person's station. The clauses are simple. Bhishma says a person keeps the duties assigned to him. He also studies the Vedas and the other texts. By these two together, he says, a person becomes twice-born. The second birth is not handed over at the first one. It is earned through steady conduct and steady learning. Notice what is absent. Nothing is thrown away here. The verse names no possession to abandon and no work to quit. What it asks for is things kept up: the duty done, the text read. Only the claim that birth alone settles who a person is gets put down. Bhishma speaks to Yudhishthira, who has won the war and wants to walk away from the throne and everything that comes with it. Bhishma's answer, at this point, is that a person grows into what he is by doing the work in front of him and learning, not by leaving it.

A boy born into a carpenter's house is not yet a carpenter. He becomes one after years of sanding, measuring and cutting at the bench, and of listening to older hands explain the grain. The shop does not change him in a day. Daily work and daily learning do. The second birth in the verse works the same way.

1. Pick one duty you already have, such as a chore, a job task, or looking after someone, and do it today with full attention from start to finish. 2. Set aside ten minutes this evening to read a few lines from a book that teaches you something, and read slowly. 3. Before bed, note which of the two you did more willingly, the duty or the reading, and write one line about it. 4. Repeat both for the next three days, without adding anything new.
