Nothing To Hold Onto

Mahabharata, Santi Parva 237.15

Meaning · English

It has no sound, no touch, no shape, no taste, no smell. It does not wear away. It has no body, coarse or fine, and no senses. Even so, it is perceived inside the body.

Bhishma lists what the Self lacks. The list follows the five things the senses grab: shabda (sound), sparsha (touch), rupa (shape), rasa (taste) and gandha (smell). The Self has none of them. Next he says it is avyaya, from a-vyaya, 'not spent, not used up'. Then he says it has no body, coarse or fine, and no senses. The last clause is the surprise: although it has nothing to see, hear or hold, it is still perceived within the body. The text's teaching is that whatever can be owned, won or lost has a shape, a texture or a weight. The Self has none of these, so nothing that happens can add to it or take from it. A throne, a victory and a defeat are all things of that kind. Bhishma says this to Yudhishthira, a winning king who is sick with grief and wants nothing to do with ruling. The reason the text gives is that part of a person is untouched by outcomes. Acting does not have to carry the whole weight of who someone is. The work can be done fully while the result is held loosely, because the one who acts is not made of results.

Picture the empty space inside a clay pot. It has no colour, no weight, no taste, yet water, grain or oil goes there, and the pot is useful because of it. Nothing you pour in changes the space itself. In the same way, the Self has no features for outcomes to stick to, yet every action happens in it.

1. Choose one task today that you care about, such as a message, a meal or a piece of work. 2. Before you begin, take half a minute to name the result you want. 3. Then put the result aside and give the whole task your attention until it is finished. 4. Afterward, sit for a minute and notice what is still there whether the task went well or badly.
