One Self, Two Descriptions
Mahabharata, Santi Parva 237.31
Meaning · English
The Self that does not perish, said to take on action, is no other than the Self that does not perish, said to do nothing at all.
Two words carry this. Akshara means that which does not decay or fall away; here it names the Self. Kartritva means being the doer, the one who acts. Its opposite is akartritva, being a non-doer, standing apart from all action. Bhishma's claim is simple. The Self described as acting and the Self described as inactive are not two things. They are one Self, described from two sides. Nothing is divided, and nothing is lost when it is said to act. The verses just before explain how the acting appears. The Self is lord of all beings and has no qualities of its own, yet it enters the body, the house with nine doors, and seems to be busy there through motion, pleasure, pain and the many forms it wears. Wise people who have seen the far shore speak of it as a doer for that reason. Nilakantha reads the doing as belonging to the body and mind, with the Self only seeming to share in it. Why say this to Yudhishthira? He has won a war and is sick over what he did. He cannot tell whether he, in the deepest sense, is the one who did it. Bhishma gives him a way to see that the one who remains untouched and the one who acted are the same, so the grief does not need to cut the Self in two.
Think of the sun over a busy market. Under it people haggle, cook, quarrel and carry loads, and its light is on all of it. Yet the sun does none of these things and is not stirred by them. The market's activity and the sun's stillness are both true of one morning. The acting is in the market; the unmoved light is the Self.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message. Before you begin, take three slow breaths. 2. While you do it, notice two things at once: the hands and thoughts moving, and the quiet awareness that watches them move. 3. When the task ends, spend one minute noticing that the watcher did not get tired, though the body did. 4. Tonight, recall one thing you regret doing. Ask quietly which part of you acted and which part only saw it.
