Thought Dissolving on Anything
Vijnana Bhairava 33
Meaning · English
In this same order, wherever the mind is set, on an emptiness, on a wall, on a vessel, on what lies beyond, the thought melts away by itself and grants the boon.
Three words carry it. Cintana is thinking, holding something in mind, and the verse says it can be done anywhere at all. Lina comes from a root meaning to cling and so to melt: the thought sinks into what it rests on, like salt into water. Varaprada is vara, a gift or chosen wish, plus prada, giver. The dissolving itself is what gives. Now the clauses. The way of going is the same as before, step by step, in order. Then the object is left open: wherever the mind is placed. Four are named: an empty space, a wall, a vessel, and something farther than these. None is holy and none is special. Svayam, by itself, says the thought is not pushed away or forced to stop. Once it has been set down and stays, it melts of its own accord. That is why an ordinary thing works as a doorway. A wall asks nothing of you and offers no story. Attention that rests on it long enough runs out of things to say, and the one resting becomes plain. The gift comes from the thought's own ending, not from the wall.
1. Sit facing a bare wall, or an empty corner of a room, at a comfortable distance. Let your eyes rest on it without hard focus. 2. Put your mind on the wall and leave it there. Do not describe it or search it for anything. 3. When a thought pulls you away, notice it and set the mind back on the wall. Do not fight the thought. 4. If your jaw, shoulders or breath tighten, let them go and look again. 5. When thoughts thin out or stop, stay with the wall and add nothing. 6. Stop when the time you set is over, and look away slowly.
The tradition's account runs like this. The mind moves because it grabs one object after another. Give it a single plain support and the grabbing slows. When the support is held without comment, the thought leans on nothing, drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls this the gift. What a sitter tends to notice is humbler. The first minutes are loud. The wall becomes a screen for plans, and the eyes want to move or glaze over. The body shows it: the jaw sets, the shoulders lift, the breath is held without your noticing. Letting those go and returning to the wall is most of the work. After a while the thoughts may thin out, and the wall may seem less like a thing and more like a place the attention sits. Small signs of it working: a longer gap between thoughts, a softer face, less effort in the looking. It goes wrong in two usual ways. One is staring hard until the eyes ache. The other is drifting into a dull haze and calling it quiet. Neither is the thought melting.
