Mind Set Inside the Skull
Vijnana Bhairava 34
Meaning · English
Set the mind within the hollow of the skull and stay there, eyes closed. Step by step, as the mind grows firm, the highest aim comes into view.
Three words carry the verse. Kapala is the skull, the bowl of bone, and antar means inside it, so the place named is the hollow within the head. Nyasa means to lay down or set in place, the way you put a cup on a table. Dardhya is firmness, the mind becoming steady and hard to knock over. The verse then says it plainly. Lay the mind down inside the skull. Stay, with the eyes closed. Little by little, as the mind firms, the highest aim is seen. Nothing is added to the setting. There is no object to picture and no count to keep. The mind is put in the place it already works from and left there. The progress is gradual, and the verse says so with its word for step by step. The doorway works by the text's own logic: the ordinary moment is opened from inside. Thinking already happens in this hollow, so the mind is returned to its own address. Closed eyes remove the outward pull. What remains is the mind resting where it lives, and steadiness is what lets the aim appear.
1. Sit with your back upright and let the hands rest. Close your eyes. 2. Bring attention to the hollow inside your skull, the space behind the face and under the crown. 3. Set the mind there as you would set down a cup. Do not squeeze or push. 4. When the mind wanders off, notice it and set it down in the same place again. 5. Stay with the eyes closed and let the steadiness build slowly. Give it ten minutes. 6. When you stop, open your eyes gently and rest a moment before moving.
The tradition's account is that the mind's restless movement comes from its being pulled outward, through the eyes and toward objects. Set it down in one place and the pull has nothing to hold. As it steadies, its movement stops, the support it leaned on drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the highest aim the verse names, and the text treats it as what remains, not something made. A sitter usually notices something plainer. At first the head feels like a surface, with tension around the eyes, the forehead and the jaw. Attention slides out to sounds or to the story of the day. The small signs of it working are a softening behind the eyes, a pause between thoughts that lasts a little longer, and the sense of being placed instead of straining. It goes wrong in familiar ways. People squeeze the head, stare inward with the eyes still working, or build a picture and take it for the aim. Sleepiness is the other common drift. The steadiness comes slowly, as the verse says.
