A Thread in the Middle

Vijnana Bhairava 35

Meaning · English

The central channel, standing in the middle, fine as a lotus fibre, is held in mind as the goddess whose space lies within. Through her, the god shines forth.

Three words carry the verse. Madhyanadi is the middle channel: madhya is middle, nadi is a tube or stream. Bisa is the fibre inside a lotus stalk, and sutra is thread, so the image is a filament almost too fine to see. Antarvyoma is inner space: antar is within, vyoman is sky or open room. The verse says the middle channel stays in the middle, thin as that lotus thread, and you hold it in mind as the goddess, a hollow of space inside you. Through her the god shines. Nothing is added to the picture and nothing is pushed anywhere. The god is Bhairava, awareness itself, and the goddess is the means by which it becomes plain. The doorway works by the text's own logic: you do not go looking elsewhere. An ordinary moment of attention is opened from inside by resting it on something fine, central and empty. Shivopadhyaya's commentary takes the middle channel here as the central pathway of the body's subtle system.

1. Sit upright and comfortable, and let your eyes close. 2. Picture a single thread in the middle of you, as fine as the fibre in a lotus stalk. 3. See it as hollow, an inner space, and hold it as the goddess. 4. Keep it faint. When it thickens or goes, return to the thinnest version. 5. When a thought pulls you away, notice it and come back to the thread. 6. Stop when the picture and the one holding it are no longer separate things.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because attention keeps jumping between outer things. Give it one fine, central, hollow line and the jumping has nothing to catch on. The support is so slight that it drops away, and what is left is awareness knowing itself, which the text calls the god shining. What a sitter tends to notice: the thread will not stay. It thickens into a rod, or it vanishes, or it turns into a thought about a thread. That is the usual first difficulty. Trying to make it vivid brings tension in the face and forehead, and the picture goes stiff. Small signs it is working are quieter: the picture grows fainter without the attention leaving, the body feels less like a shape, and there is a clear, spacious gap between one thought and the next. The common mistakes are forcing the image, hunting for a sensation, and judging the sit by how bright the line looked.
