The point behind closed eyes

Meaning · English

With the hands shut over the eyes, the gaze held back, the brow-centre pierced, the doors blocked, a point is seen. As that point slowly dissolves, in its middle is the highest state.

Three words carry most of it. Dvara means a door, here the openings through which the senses go out to the world. Bindu means a dot or a drop, a point with no size to speak of. Sthiti means standing or abiding, a place where you stay. The verse closes the doors, sees a point, and stays in the middle of it. The clauses go in order. The hands cover the eyes, so sight is cut off and the gaze turns back on itself. The brows are parted: attention goes to the space between them and rests there. The doors are blocked, so little comes in from outside. Then a point is seen. It is not looked for. It shows up once the outward pull has quieted. The point dissolves gradually, and the text names no moment of stopping. What is left is its middle, and there the highest state is found. By the text's own logic this works as a doorway because the ordinary moment is not escaped. The same seeing that usually runs outward is shut off at its exit and left to fold into itself. The state is not at the end of a long road. It is in the middle of what is already there.

1. Sit with your back upright and let your elbows rest on a table or your lap, so your arms are not working. 2. Lay your palms lightly over your closed eyes. Do not press on the eyeballs. 3. Let your gaze turn inward to the space between the brows. Let the outside sounds be, and do not follow them. 4. Wait until a point shows. Do not make it. When the mind wanders, come back to the space between the brows. 5. When the point thins and fades, stay in its middle. Do not chase it. 6. After about eight minutes, lower your hands and open your eyes slowly.

The tradition's account is that the mind's movement depends on what the senses bring it. Close the doors and the movement thins. The point is the last thing the mind can hold. When the point dissolves, the support drops away and awareness is left knowing itself. That is why the text sends you to its middle and not to something beyond it. A sitter tends to notice other things first. The forearms tire and the shoulders creep up, and an elbow rest helps. The eyes behind the hands fill with moving colour and grain, and none of that is the point. Attention keeps jumping to it and then to commentary about it. Small signs it is working: the colours settle, something steadier shows between the brows, and the urge to check on it eases. The usual mistakes are pressing on the eyes, straining to make the point appear, and grabbing it so hard that it breaks into pieces. The breath is not mentioned, so it is left alone.
