Meaning · English

Hold in mind a point shaped like a tiny fire-mark, born from a stirring inside the radiant abode. Rest it at the crest's end, in the heart, where dissolving ends. For one who meditates this way, absorption comes.

Three words carry the verse. Bindu is a dot, a drop, a single point with no extent. Sukshma agni is subtle fire: a flame so small it is only a mark, a tilaka, like the dot of color on a forehead. Laya comes from a root meaning to melt or cling, so it means dissolving, being absorbed. The point is the size of a fire-mark and shaped like one. It is born from a stirring inside the abode, the place of radiance where awareness already lives. So it is not made up from outside. A movement within that light shows up as a spark. The verse then places it: at the crest's end, in the heart, at the end of dissolving. The spark is held where things finish melting. The last line says that for the one who keeps it in mind, absorption follows. Bhairava's logic is that an ordinary moment already has this inner stirring in it. Attention does not need to go anywhere else. It rests on the smallest flame inside the moment, and what rests there starts to melt into it.

1. Sit upright with the spine long and the hands resting. Let the eyes close or soften. 2. Bring to mind one very small point shaped like a fire-mark. Do not build it up. 3. Rest it in the heart, at the place where things finish dissolving. 4. Stay with the point as it is. If it fades or flickers, let it, and keep your attention where it was. 5. When the mind wanders, notice it and come back to the small flame in the heart. 6. Stop when the sit feels finished. Let the point go and sit a moment longer before you move.

The tradition's account is that the mind's restless movement needs many objects to feed on. Give it one point, as small as a flame-mark, and the movement thins out. The point itself then dissolves into the awareness that was holding it. What is left is awareness knowing itself. In the text's terms, the support drops away. A sitter usually notices something more modest. The spine is upright and long, the shoulders and jaw let go, and the eyes go soft. The breath is not part of the instruction, so it can be left alone. The first difficulty is that the point keeps turning into a picture, larger and more detailed. Attention then grips it and the forehead tightens. A small sign it is working is that the image gets fainter and attention feels held rather than pushed. The usual ways it goes wrong are straining to keep the flame bright, or drifting into a pleasant haze that has no point left in it.
