Inside the Closed Lotus
Vijnana Bhairava 49
Meaning · English
With the eyes sunk into the open space of the heart, resting in the middle of a closed lotus, the mind on nothing else, you reach, fortunate one, the highest good fortune.
Three words carry it. Hrdayakasha joins hrd, the heart, with akasha, open space. The heart is treated as a room with nothing in it, not as an organ. Nilina means melted or sunk into, and aksha means eye, here standing for the senses that face outward. Sampuța is a lotus shut like cupped hands, or a small closed box. So the senses go inward and dissolve into the heart's space. You settle in the middle of a lotus whose petals are closed, and the outside is shut away. Ananyacetas means a mind with no other object. Nothing is left for it to wander toward. Bhairava calls Bhairavi subhage, fortunate one, and says the one who stays this way reaches the highest good fortune. The doorway is the plainest moment there is: you are aware, and the awareness is already felt in the chest. Nothing has to be added or fetched. The text opens that ordinary moment from inside, by closing the outer door and keeping a single place for attention.
1. Sit with your back upright and your hands resting. Close your eyes. 2. Let the eyes sink back and down, away from the front of the face, toward the middle of the chest. 3. Picture the chest as an open space. In its middle is a lotus with its petals closed. Rest inside it. 4. Keep nothing else in mind. When a thought pulls you away, notice it and come back to the middle of the lotus. 5. Do not push the picture if it fades. Stay with the open space. 6. Stop when the time is up. Open your eyes slowly.
The tradition's account: the mind keeps moving because it keeps reaching for objects through the senses. When the eyes sink inward and only one place is held, the reaching has nothing to catch. The movement stops, the support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is the text's teaching, not a claim about the body. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The eyes want to strain, or to roll up toward the forehead, and the brow tightens. When the face goes soft, the jaw loosens and the shoulders settle. The picture of the lotus flickers, and the mind slips off to plans and then returns. Small signs of it working are that the picture needs less effort, the chest feels roomy, and the gaps between thoughts last longer. The usual faults are forcing the image, gripping the chest, and mistaking dullness for stillness. The breath is not asked to change, so it is left alone.
