From true knowledge of the means of knowing, the knowable, doubt, purpose, example, settled tenet, the parts of argument, testing reasoning, conclusion, debate, wrangling, cavil, false reasons, quibble, futile rejoinder and the points of defeat, the highest good is reached.

What does a person need to understand to be free? For the Nyaya, the answer is sixteen topics, known as they really are. That knowledge brings nihshreyasa, the highest good. Two topics come first. Pramana is the means by which anything is known. Prameya is what there is to know; Vatsyayana singles out the self as the chief of these. Then come the working parts of enquiry: doubt, a purpose, an example both sides accept, an agreed tenet, the steps of a formal argument, testing reasoning and a settled conclusion. Then talk between people: honest debate, wrangling to win, and cavil that only attacks. Last come the failures: false reasons, quibbles on words, empty rejoinders and the points where an arguer loses. Vatsyayana asks why doubt and the rest are listed separately, since they fall under the first two. His answer is that listing them makes reasoning its own discipline, not only inward study like the Upanishads. Reasoning begins where a matter is doubted, neither unknown nor already settled.

A football referee's rulebook covers more than how a goal is scored. Whole pages go to offside, handball, diving and time-wasting. A referee who knew only the scoring rule would wave every cheat through. Gautama's list works the same way. The means of knowing and the steps of sound argument sit beside quibble, cavil and false reasons, because a fair verdict needs both.

Much of this list has close modern neighbours. Epistemology still sorts knowledge by its sources: perception, inference and testimony are standard topics, near to what Nyaya calls pramana. Critical-thinking courses catalogue fallacies such as equivocation, which is close to the Nyaya quibble on words. Argumentation theory separates cooperative discussion aimed at truth from debate aimed only at winning, much like the line Nyaya draws between honest debate and wrangling. Where the two part ways is the goal. Modern philosophy rarely claims that correct reasoning frees a person from suffering. That is a religious and philosophical claim with no empirical test. Cognitive therapy offers a narrower, loose parallel: correcting distorted beliefs can ease distress. Whether sound thinking alone can change how a whole life goes remains an open question.
