Undoing the Chain of Suffering

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.2

Meaning · English

Suffering, birth, activity, faults, false knowledge: as each later one is removed, the one just before it is removed too, and from that comes release.

The opening sutra promised that knowing things truly leads to the highest good. How? The answer is a chain of five links. Duhkha is suffering. Janma is birth, taking on a body. Pravritti is activity, acting through body, speech and mind. Dosha means faults, the drives that push action. Mithya-jnana is false knowledge. For the Nyaya, each link rests on the one after it. Vatsyayana explains the order. False knowledge, such as taking what is not the self for the self, pain for pleasure, or the passing for the lasting, breeds attraction to what pleases and aversion to what does not. From these grow faults like greed, envy and deceit. Faults drive action, harmful or kind. Vatsyayana notes that here the word pravritti also covers the merit and demerit that action leaves behind, and that is what earns a further birth. Birth brings a body, senses and mind, and with them suffering. So the cure works from the far end. Remove false knowledge and the faults lose their ground. Then activity, birth and suffering fall in turn. What remains is apavarga: release from the whole chain.

A kitchen tap left running fills the sink. The sink overflows onto the floor, and the water seeps under the door into the hallway. Mopping the hallway does nothing while the tap still runs. Turn off the tap and the overflow stops, then the floor dries, then the hallway. The tap is false knowledge. The hallway puddle is suffering.

The closest modern relative is cognitive psychology. Cognitive behavioural therapy works on the idea that how we appraise events shapes what we feel and do, and that correcting distorted beliefs can ease distress. That part of the chain has good clinical support. Two links fare less well. Rebirth, the claim that action earns a further birth, has no scientific evidence and lies outside what current methods can test. And the strict one-way order is simpler than what psychology finds. Beliefs, emotions and habits feed back on each other, and seeing that a belief is false often fails to dissolve a craving at once. Whether true understanding alone can end suffering, or must be joined by practice and time, remains open, in philosophy of mind as in the clinic.
