What Counts as Perception

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.4

Meaning · English

Perception is the knowing that arises when a sense meets its object. It is knowing that does not depend on words, that does not stray from its object, and that is settled rather than doubtful.

Sutra 1.1.3 named four pramanas, or means of valid knowledge. The question now is what makes something a perception. For the Nyaya, perception is knowledge produced by contact between a sense organ and its object: the eye with a colour, the tongue with a taste. Vatsyayana notes that self and mind are also involved, but inference needs them too. Sense-object contact is what marks perception off. Three qualifiers follow. Avyapadeshya means 'not made of words'. You know the taste before any name for it is at work, and the word 'sweet' enters only when you report it, so perception is not a kind of testimony. Avyabhichari means 'not straying': the knowledge matches its object. Vatsyayana's example is the summer mirage, where shimmering light seen from far off is taken for water. Sense contact happened, yet this is not perception in the strict sense. Vyavasayatmaka means 'definite', so a wavering 'is it this or that?' does not count either. Real contact is necessary but not enough.

1. At your next meal, close your eyes for ten seconds after one bite and notice the taste before you name it. The word arrives after the taste. 2. When you see something across a street or room and are unsure what it is, tell yourself 'not settled yet' and step closer before deciding. 3. Tonight, recall one thing you were sure you saw today. Ask whether you checked it, or whether it could have been a mirage-like mistake.

Modern physiology agrees with the starting point. Seeing, tasting and hearing begin when receptors meet light, chemicals or sound. Where Nyaya differs from everyday usage is in building accuracy into the definition. A psychologist calls a mirage a perception that misleads. For the Nyaya it is not perception at all. Philosophers today treat 'see' and 'know' as success words in the same way, so the move is familiar. Physics adds a twist. A mirage is light really bent by hot air, so the eye reports truly and the error lies in the judgement 'water'. Whether perception is free of words is still open. Cognitive science finds that expectation and learned categories shape what we notice, and philosophers debate whether experience has content before concepts. Nyaya sides with those who say some knowing comes before the name.
