Inference in Three Kinds

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.5

Meaning · English

Now inference. It is preceded by perception, and it is of three kinds: from what comes before, from what remains, and from what is seen in common.

Perception was the first pramana, or means of valid knowledge. How do we know what we are not seeing? The Nyaya answer is anumana, inference, and the sutra ties it to perception: inference always comes after it. Vatsyayana explains the steps. You have seen a sign and the thing it signals together. Now you see the sign. You remember the link, and the unseen thing is known. Then come three kinds. Purvavat, 'from what comes before', runs from a cause to its effect: rising clouds tell you rain is coming. Sheshavat, 'from what remains', runs from an effect back to its cause: a swollen, fast, muddy river tells you rain has already fallen. Samanyatodrishta, 'seen in common', runs from a general pattern: whatever is seen in one place and later in another has moved, so the sun moves though no one sees it go. Vatsyayana also offers a second reading: smoke to fire; elimination, ruling options out until one remains; and reasoning from desires to a self that holds them.

1. Today, when you conclude something you did not directly see (it rained overnight, a colleague is already in, the milk has gone off), pause for ten seconds and name the sign you actually saw. 2. Sort it: cause to effect, effect back to cause, or a general pattern applied to a new case. 3. Ask when you first saw that sign and that thing together. If you cannot remember ever seeing them together, hold the conclusion loosely. 4. Tonight, recall one inference that turned out wrong and find which link failed.

Modern logic sorts reasoning differently, into deduction, induction and abduction, yet the three kinds map onto familiar work. Cause to effect is prediction, as in forecasting. Effect to cause is close to abduction, or inference to the best explanation, the daily method of doctors and detectives. The insistence that inference rests on earlier perception sits close to empiricism, and Hume made the same starting point his problem: past pairings of sign and thing do not by themselves guarantee the next one. That question remains open. Cognitive science adds a twist: the brain seems to infer even while perceiving, which blurs the clean line Nyaya draws between the two. The sun example also shows a limit. We now explain its apparent journey by the earth turning, so a sound pattern can still yield a mistaken conclusion about its cause.
