Comparison is establishing what is still to be known through its likeness to something already well known.

For Vatsyayana, the question behind the sutra is how we learn what an unfamiliar word picks out. For the Nyaya, comparison, called upamana, is one of the pramanas, the reliable means of knowing. The definition has three parts. Prasiddha is the well known, something you already recognise. Sadharmya is shared features, likeness. Sadhya is what is still to be established. Comparison is knowing the new thing through its likeness to the known one. The standard picture, built on Vatsyayana's example, runs like this. A villager is told that the gavaya, a wild ox, is like a cow. Later, in the forest, he sees a cow-like animal. Perception alone only shows him the animal. What comparison adds, Vatsyayana explains, is the link between name and thing: this is what the word gavaya names. His second example is practical. Told that a certain herb looks like the mung bean plant, a person can find it and gather it for medicine. On this reading, description plus resemblance is what lets a new name be applied correctly.

1. Today, when you meet an unfamiliar word for a plant, tool or dish, ask someone to describe it by likeness to something you know: like this, but different in that way. 2. Write the shared features and the differences in one line each. 3. When you next see the thing, check it against both lines before you use the name, and notice whether likeness alone would have been enough. 4. This evening, explain one thing you know well to someone by comparing it to something familiar to them, then ask whether they could now recognise it.

Cognitive science gives this idea a strong footing. Much word learning happens through description and analogy, not only through being shown, and research on categories suggests people sort things by resemblance to typical members. Field guides and medical teaching often work this way. Whether comparison is a separate means of knowing is another matter. Many modern epistemologists would break the gavaya case into testimony, perception and a small inference, which is close to what some Indian critics of Nyaya also argued. The sharper worry is about similarity itself. Philosophers have pointed out that anything resembles anything in some respect, so likeness only guides us once we know which features matter. Mistaking one wild plant or mushroom for another shows the cost. What makes a resemblance the relevant one is still an open question.
