Wonder as Ground

Shiva Sutras 1.12

Meaning · English

Wonder is the ground the yogi stands on, step after step.

Two words carry the sutra. Vismaya is wonder: the stopped, open feeling of meeting something larger than you expected. Bhumika is a ground, a level, a stage, the place you stand while you climb. Yoga here is union, being at one with the Self. The sutra says wonder is that ground. Plain sense: for the yogi, wonder is not a passing mood but the footing itself. Each stage of yoga is a deeper astonishment. The Self meets sights, sounds and tastes, and finds in each of them its own fullness. Why Shiva teaches it here: the sutras before it name awareness as the self and bondage as a kind of limited knowing. If awareness is already whole, the first thing a yogi feels is surprise at that. This belongs to shambhava, the way of Shiva, which works by awareness alone, with no technique and no steps. Anava, the way of small means, and shakta, the way of pure thought, are different doors. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini is taken to read the wonder as delight in one's own fullness, found in whatever is seen or experienced. The stages of yoga are its resting places. Bhaskara's Varttika stresses that this wonder is never satisfied. It marks each step of a climb that ends in rest in the highest.

Someone walks out of a dim stairwell onto a hilltop at first light and stops mid-step, forgetting what they came up for. They stand there looking. The standing is the wonder, and the yogi's ground is that same stopped, open footing, which returns at each new stage.

1. Choose one ordinary sight today, such as a window, a cup of tea or a face across the table. 2. Look at it for one full minute without naming it or planning anything. 3. Notice whether any astonishment shows up, even faint, that anything is here at all. Do not try to make it come. 4. Repeat once more this week, in a different place.
