The Maiden Will
Shiva Sutras 1.13
Meaning · English
Will is Shakti; will is Uma; will is the maiden.
Three words carry this sutra. Iccha is will: the pull toward something, before any plan is made. Shakti is power, the capacity to act, and in this teaching she is Shiva's own power, not something added to him. Kumari is a young girl, a maiden, one not yet given to anything else. Uma is a name of the Goddess, Shiva's partner. The sutra sets these side by side and says they name one thing. The will of the awakened yogi is Shakti. She is called Uma and called the maiden because she is fresh and undivided, and she turns wholly toward Shiva. The sutra follows 1.12, where wonder is the yogi's ground. Wonder is the first stirring, and will is what moves from it. It belongs to the shambhava way, the way of will alone, which needs no method. The other two ways, shakta and anava, use mind and breath. Bhaskara's Varttika reads the will as the yogi's own, once he has reached the state of Bhairava, Shiva in his fierce, all-containing form. Uma has dropped every other attachment and is given only to worship. The maiden is enjoyed by no one but that yogi. The commentators agree that this will is not an ordinary wanting.
You wake thirsty. Before any thought, your hand is already moving toward the glass. Nothing was planned, and the whole body leaned one way. The sutra points to that undivided leaning and calls it Shakti, a power that belongs to Shiva himself.
1. Tomorrow morning, before you get up, lie still for one minute and notice the first wish that arises. It might be for water, for light, or for a person. 2. Once at midday, pause a breath before reaching for something, a cup or your phone. Notice the wish that comes before the hand. 3. In the evening, recall one wish today that came with no reason attached. Only notice how complete it felt while it lasted.
