The Body Seen
Shiva Sutras 1.14
Meaning · English
Whatever is seen is the body. The body, too, is something seen.
Two words. Drishya is what is seen, from the root drish, to see. Sharira is the body, from a root for what wears and breaks down. The sutra sets them side by side: what is seen is the body. The yogi's body is not only the flesh. It is everything that appears before him. The sutras before it name wonder and will as the yogi's ground. From that ground he looks at the world, and Vasugupta teaches that what he looks at is not a stranger's. It is held as his own body, as near as the word 'I'. This belongs to the shambhava way, the way of Shiva's own will. It asks for no method and no reasoning, only a change in how seeing is held. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the sutra to say that the yogi's whole seen world is felt as his body, as close to him as a body is to anyone. Bhaskara's Varttika adds a contrast. An ordinary person finds his body as one more seen thing, like a pot, without life of its own. The yogi finds the seen and the body in each other.
A pot on a shelf is simply there, apart from you. Your own hand is not apart. You see it and feel it from inside at once. The sutra says the yogi meets the whole seen world as you meet your hand, and not as the pot on the shelf.
1. Once today, sit for two minutes and look at your own hand, then at an object across the room. Notice how each one feels as it is seen. 2. While walking, pick one thing in view, a tree or a wall, and notice if it feels far or near. 3. In the evening, recall one moment when a place felt like part of you, such as a kitchen or a doorway. Notice what was different in the seeing.
