Mind Meeting the Heart

Shiva Sutras 1.15

Meaning · English

When the mind meets the heart, what is seen is witnessed in its sleep.

Four terms carry the sutra. Citta is the mind, the part that gathers, names and sorts what comes (root cit, to perceive). Hridaya is the heart, the place everything is drawn back into, not the organ. Sanghatta is a striking together, a close meeting, like two things pressed until they touch. Drishya is what is to be seen (root drish, to see), and the previous sutra named it as the body. Svapa is sleep. Darshana is seeing. The plain sense: when the mind meets the heart, the seen is witnessed in its sleep. The mind stops running outward after objects and presses back to where it began. The body and the world it shows are then watched at rest, like a sleeper seen from a quiet room. The Sutras teach this as a way of will with no steps, the shambhava way, and it follows 1.14, which named the body as the visible. If the body is only the seen, the one who sees can be found by turning the mind inward. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the meeting in the heart as the mind merging into consciousness, so the seen shows as resting there. The commentators differ on how to read the last word, but not on the direction: the mind goes inward and the seen goes quiet.

1. Sit where you will not be spoken to, with the body still. 2. Let the mind follow its usual pull to sounds, thoughts and the body's feeling. 3. Draw that attention gently back to the heart, and let the mind rest against it. 4. Watch the body and the room as things being seen, quiet, like a sleeper in a dim room. 5. When the mind runs off, notice it and bring it back to the heart. 6. Stop when the seen feels settled, and rise slowly.
