Joining the pure principle
Shiva Sutras 1.16
Meaning · English
Or, by joining with the pure principle, the power of the bound animal is not there.
Four words carry it. Shuddha means pure, unmixed. Tattva means "thatness", what a thing really is; the pure tattva is Shiva, the one reality. Sandhana means joining, holding one thing fitted to another. Pashu means animal, a beast on a tether; the text uses it for the person bound by limits. Apashu-shakti is the power of that bound creature, with the "a" in front saying it is absent. Va means "or". The plain sense: or, by joining with the pure reality, the bound creature's power is not there. Bhaskara's Varttika says the joining is seeing the whole world as made of that reality. One who does this has no tether left, and like Sadashiva, a name for Shiva as lord of all that appears, becomes lord of the world. Why Shiva teaches it here: the sutra before names the body as something seen, and the one before that speaks of the mind gathering in the heart. A body that is seen stands apart from the one who sees it, so it cannot be the binder. The sutra then says what to hold in its place. It belongs to shambhava, Shiva's own way, entered by will and wonder with no steps. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, reads it as holding to the pure principle and so ending the limits of the bound creature. Bhaskara's stress falls on how: the joining is seeing everything as made of it.
1. Sit or stand where you are, with the body still. 2. Take the body as something you are looking at, as the earlier sutra says, a thing seen. 3. Let the same be true of the room, the sounds and the people. See each as made of the one pure reality, Shiva. 4. When the mind wanders into a plan or a worry, see that too as made of it, and stay. 5. Stop when the joining feels loose or the seeing goes flat. Rise slowly.
