Powers Wait on Devotion

Meaning · English

For the yogi who has mastered the senses, who is steady and has mastered the breath, and who holds his mind on me, the powers come and stand in attendance.

Krishna opens with three descriptions of the yogi. Jitendriya means one who has won over the senses; indriya is any faculty that reaches out to the world, such as the eye, ear or tongue. Yukta means joined or steady, from yuj, to yoke, as an ox is yoked to a plough: the mind is harnessed, not scattered. Jitashvasa means one who has mastered the breath. Then comes the turn. This yogi holds his mind on Krishna. Dharana, from dhri, to hold, is that holding of the mind in one place, and here the place is Krishna. Last, the siddhis, from sidh, to succeed or be accomplished, are the powers. They upatishthanti, they stand near, the way servants wait at a door. They come to the yogi; he does not chase them. Krishna promises nothing to the reader here. In this section of the teaching the powers are obstacles and a waste of time for anyone who seeks Krishna himself. Uddhava is about to ask what the powers are and how many there are, so Krishna first fixes their place: attendants of a mind held on him, never the goal. The commentators read the order as the point, with Krishna first and the powers after. What the teaching asks is a mastered, steady mind that rests on Krishna, with the powers a side matter.

A man walks into his house to pray. Servants line the hall with trays and keys, waiting for orders. He passes them without a glance, because he came for the shrine. The servants are the siddhis, the shrine is Krishna, and the man's eyes stay on where he is going.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet spot with your phone in another room. 2. Breathe in your ordinary way. Do not force or hold the breath. 3. Rest your mind on one thing you love: a name of Krishna, or a picture of him in your mind. 4. Each time it wanders, note what pulled it, a sound, a worry, a snack, and gently return. 5. Afterwards, remember just one pull.

A taxi driver sits parked outside a hospital at night, waiting for his sister's surgery to end. His hands are restless and his thumb keeps going to the phone. His breath is short and quick. Krishna's teaching has an order he can follow. First, let the breath slow, because an even breath settles the body. Next, let the senses stop running after the screen, the radio, the tea stall. Then give the mind one place to rest, a name or a face of Krishna. Ordinary experience confirms the first part: slow breathing calms a racing heart, and a mind that is not being pulled in five directions can stay with one thing. The text's further claim, that powers then wait on such a yogi, lies outside what medicine can speak to. A family doctor knows of no means to the extraordinary abilities the later verses list. Nor does the teaching ask him to look for them. It does not promise that his sister will recover, and it does not replace the surgeon. It offers him a steadier waiting.
