Uddhava asks: By what holding of the mind, and of what kind, does a power come, Achyuta? And how many powers are there? Tell me, for you are the giver of powers to yogis. Krishna answers: Eighteen powers are named by those who have gone to the far shore of yoga, each tied to a holding of the mind. Of these, eight rest chiefly on me. Ten arise from the qualities of nature.
Uddhava asks three plain things: which fixing of the mind brings a power, of what kind it is, and how many there are. Three words carry the verse. Dharana is holding, from dhri, to hold: keeping the mind on one place, as a hand keeps a lamp steady. Siddhi is accomplishment, from sidh, to succeed: a thing that has come off. Achyuta, his name for Krishna, means the one who does not fall. Uddhava calls him the giver of powers to yogis, so he asks the source directly. Krishna answers with a number, eighteen, and says those who have crossed to the far end of yoga are the ones who name them. Each power is reached through its own dharana. He then splits the count. Eight depend chiefly on him. Ten come from the gunas, the strands of nature that make up mind and world. Why teach this at all? Uddhava asked, and Krishna answers fully rather than leaving the subject murky. A clear count lets the listener see the whole field. The same teaching says that for one who seeks Krishna himself, these powers are obstacles and a waste of time. The count is given so that nothing about them stays mysterious. It promises no power to anyone. Sridhara Svami reads the split as one between powers that rest on the Lord and powers born of the gunas.
A guest arrives at a friend's house and is met at the door with a tray of sweets, eighteen kinds, each named. The host is waiting inside. The tray is the list of powers, handsome and countable, and the host is Krishna, who is what the visit was for.
1. Tonight, write down three things you wish you could do better, such as remember names, stay calm, or wake early. 2. Beside each, write one line on what it is for. Notice whether any answer points past itself. 3. Tomorrow, hold your attention on one ordinary thing for two minutes, such as a candle flame or your own breath. Count how many times it wanders. 4. Notice, without scolding, what pulled it away.
A man stands at a counter reading a brochure for a memory course that promises he will recall every name and face. He wants to sign. Before he does, the verse would have him ask what the thing is for, and who gives it. Uddhava does exactly this: he asks how many such things there are before he asks for any one. Looked at that way, the brochure becomes a list with a price, a method and a purpose. The man can then ask whether he wants the skill or the standing it would give him. Ordinary experience confirms that attention held on one thing grows steadier with practice, and that skill can pull a person toward showing off. The text itself teaches that these eighteen powers are for yogis who have gone far, and that they rest on Krishna or on nature's strands. The verse does not say the brochure's course will work, and it does not promise any power to this man. It leaves his decision, and his money, in his own hands.
