Meaning · English

Becoming tiny, becoming vast in body, becoming light. Reaching whatever one wishes through the senses. Free play of will over what is seen and heard. Setting powers in motion, which is mastery. Staying unbound among the qualities of nature, which is self-command. And whatever one longs for, that one fully gets. These eight, gentle Uddhava, are my own powers, held to be natural to me.

Krishna now names the eight that rest chiefly on him. Aṇimā comes from aṇu, an atom: becoming as small as one chooses. Mahimā comes from mahat, great: the body grown vast. Laghimā comes from laghu, light: weightlessness. Prāpti is reaching: the senses touch whatever is wished for, however far. Prākāmya comes from kāma, a wish: the will moves freely over things seen and heard, and nothing it wants is blocked. Īśitā comes from īś, to rule: setting powers in motion. Vaśitā comes from vaś, to bring under one's will: staying unattached to the three qualities of nature, so that pleasure and pain do not pull. The last is the longing that is fully met, whatever it is. Krishna calls them autpattika, inborn in him, which says where they belong. They are his by nature, and a yogi's share is borrowed. Sridhara Svami reads the eight as the main ones, resting on the Lord. Uddhava asked how many powers there are and how they come. This is the first half of Krishna's answer, the eight that are his own. The reader is asked to see whose they are.

A lamp on a table throws a bright patch on the wall, and another on the ceiling. Each patch looks like a thing in itself. All of them are the lamp's light. The eight powers are the patches. Krishna is the lamp.

1. Choose one small wish today, such as a snack, a message, or a purchase. 2. Before acting on it, wait ten slow breaths and notice the mood it rose from: tired, restless, bored. 3. Then decide freely, and note whether you chose or were pulled. 4. At night, spend two minutes naming that wish aloud to Krishna in your own words.

A young man sits up at midnight, thumb over the buy button for a gadget he did not want at noon. Tiredness has made the wish loud. The text's word for the freedom it praises is staying unbound among the qualities of nature, the moods of restlessness, dullness and clarity that colour every wish. Here that freedom looks small and practical. He sees the wish rise. He sees the mood it rode in on. He waits, and then chooses, or lets the wish go. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint and makes wanting louder. The text's list also holds far larger powers, such as becoming tiny or vast. Those are Krishna's teaching, offered as his own nature. They are not promised to the man at the screen. Choosing well at midnight does not remove his debts, his loneliness, or a doctor's advice about sleep.
