Why He Is Called Indra

Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.14

तस्मादिदन्द्रो नामेदन्द्रो ह वै नाम तमिदन्द्रं सन्तमिन्द्र इत्याचक्षते परोक्षेण । परोक्षप्रिया इव हि देवाः परोक्षप्रिया इव हि देवाः

Meaning · English

So his name is Idandra, 'he who sees this.' People call him Indra instead, speaking indirectly, for the gods seem to love the indirect. They seem to love the indirect.

The Self has just looked at the person and said, 'I have seen this.' A name comes out of that act: Idandra, 'the one who sees this.' Indra, the well-known king of the gods, is that same name with its edges worn down and said a little sideways. The text gives the reason. The gods seem to prefer things veiled rather than stated flat out. So the god people call Indra turns out to be the Self that sees from inside the person. The repeated final line closes the section.

A girl named Elizabeth is called 'Betsy' at home. Someone who hears only 'Betsy' would never guess the full name behind it, yet the family knows exactly who is meant. Indra is the short, familiar form. The full name, 'the one who sees this,' says plainly what the Self did when it looked at the person.

तो उसका नाम इदन्द्र है, 'वह जो इसे देखता है।' लोग परोक्ष रूप से बोलते हुए उसे इन्द्र कहते हैं, क्योंकि देवताओं को परोक्ष ही प्रिय जान पड़ता है। उन्हें परोक्ष ही प्रिय जान पड़ता है।

आत्मा ने अभी-अभी पुरुष को देखा है और कहा है, 'मैंने इसे देख लिया।' उसी क्रिया से एक नाम निकलता है: इदन्द्र, 'वह जो इसे देखता है।' देवताओं के प्रसिद्ध राजा इन्द्र वही नाम है, जिसके किनारे घिस गए हैं और जिसे थोड़ा तिरछा करके बोला जाता है। ग्रन्थ इसका कारण बताता है। देवताओं को बातें सपाट कहने की अपेक्षा ढकी हुई रखना अच्छा लगता जान पड़ता है। तो जिस देवता को लोग इन्द्र कहते हैं, वह वही आत्मा निकलता है जो पुरुष के भीतर से देखता है। दोहराई गई अंतिम पंक्ति इस खंड को समाप्त करती है।

एलिज़ाबेथ नाम की एक लड़की को घर में 'बेट्सी' कहा जाता है। जिसने केवल 'बेट्सी' सुना हो, वह कभी अनुमान नहीं लगा पाएगा कि इसके पीछे पूरा नाम क्या है, फिर भी परिवार ठीक-ठीक जानता है कि किसकी बात हो रही है। इन्द्र छोटा, घरेलू रूप है। पूरा नाम, 'वह जो इसे देखता है', साफ़-साफ़ बताता है कि आत्मा ने पुरुष को देखते समय क्या किया।
