The Self Recognizes Itself
Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.13
Meaning · English
Born, he surveyed all beings: 'What here could claim to be other than me?' He saw this very person as Brahman, reaching everywhere, and said, 'I have seen it.'
Once the Self has entered the body and been born as a person, it looks out over the world of creatures. It asks whether anything there could be named as truly separate from itself, and it finds nothing. Instead it sees the person, this very human being, as Brahman: the whole of reality, stretched through everything. Its words 'I have seen it' mark a moment of recognition. The one who entered the body looks out from inside it and knows what it is looking at.
A carpenter walks through a house he built years ago, now full of other people's furniture and noise. In every room he runs a hand along a beam and knows his own joints. Nothing there is foreign to him. So the Self, born inside the person, looks out at all beings and finds only itself, spread through them.
